What’s So Great About Ugly?

I just finished reading a book in which every character was either psychotically deceitful or just plain unlikable. The two characters in the book who started out as likable were chipped away at until they too became hateful. Why? What is attractive about this?

I am dying to ask the author, who I happen to know spent over a year writing this novel, and whom I actually like quite a bit. I attended a book signing she did a couple of years ago and she was absolutely charming. I have read her blog and she would appear to be a fun, intelligent, wonderful person. She is a good writer, and yet this book was so ugly. I kept reading on, hoping anyone at all would be redeemed, but no. It just got worse and worse. And then unbelievably clichéd.

I am so disappointed. I love reading a good book and I had really hoped that this would be that. It was not. I know life comes with challenges and that things don’t always work out the way we’d like. I try to address some of those challenges in my own books. Still, I believe there are good people in the world. That not everyone is so flawed that they can’t be likable. Life, at least to me, is all about balance. There was no balance in this book. It was just ugly!

Maybe the author was in a really bad emotional place when she wrote this or perhaps her outlook on life was just bad at the time. I would think that an author’s mental state would influence a lot of what they write either from the standpoint of reflection or a better vision of their own future. Might be an interesting topic for research.
